Cocaine Abstinence Duration-Induced Alterations in Corticostriatal Structural Plasticity - Neuroscience Seminar Series
Thursday, Aug. 29
4 p.m. - 5 p.m. Location: CRA 12.110

Neuroscience Seminar Series

Title - Cocaine Abstinence Duration-Induced Alterations in Corticostriatal Structural Plasticity

Speaker - Michael Scofield, PhD
Assistant Professor
Medical University of South Carolina

Michael Scofield’s lab at the Medical University of South Carolina studies the cellular substrates of drug addiction with a focus on the molecular underpinnings of relapse vulnerability. Studies performed in the lab measure aspects of both neuronal and non-neuronal cells in order to gain a better understanding of how the interaction of both cell types contributes to synaptic plasticity dysfunction linked to addiction. To do this the lab studies the morphological plasticity of astrocytes and neurons using confocal microscopy, and viral vector targeting and labeling strategies. In addition, studies in-vivo probe for alterations in glutamate and nitric oxide levels that contribute to the induction of drug-seeking in response to conditioned cue exposure.

Light refreshments will be available.
