Reading the World Book Club
Tuesday, Feb. 11
noon - 1 p.m. Location: MC 4.202

Please join us for the discussion of the first book of 2020 Reading the World Book Club series: Go, Went, Gone, by Jenny Erpenbeck, translated from German by Susan Bernofsky. The brown-bag discussion will be on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 from 12 noon to 1 pm, in the UTD McDermott Library, MC 4.2 (this is the conference room in the library's administrative suite on the 4th floor). The book is available for loan from the UTD library and will be available for purchase from the campus bookstore. The book club is free and open to students, faculty, staff, and members of the larger community.

Synopsis of the book: Whenever the political psyche strains to find a signal within the noise, some novels seem perfectly timed to answer the call. Set smack in the middle of Europe’s refugee crisis in 2015, Erpenbeck’s novel explores what happens when a German pensioner’s life intersects with a group of African refugees. What could easily end in trite kumbaya idealism instead evades simple answers, preferring to linger in awkward spaces, amid unpleasant truths: How willing are we to upend our own comforts to help a stranger? Thanks in part to a superb translation, you don’t have to be freighted with German history to feel uneasy about these questions.

Persons with disabilities may submit a request for accommodations to participate in this event at UT Dallas' ADA website. You may also call (972) 883-5331 for assistance or send an email to [email protected]. All requests should be received no later than 2 business days prior to the event.
