Dr. Baowei Fei

The legacy of Cecil H. and Ida Green at The University of Texas at Dallas was to establish in Dallas a world-class cohort of faculty and students in the new domain of integrated, interdisciplinary biomedical research. The resources and talents of UT Dallas and UT Southwestern are combined under the guidance of the two institutions’ Green Centers. Endowments were generated for faculty members whose research expertise lies at one of the interfaces between biomedical science and physical, mathematical, computational or engineering science, emphasizing, in particular, research that will create synergy with research at UT Southwestern. The chair was established in 1995.

“With new imaging technology, we can detect diseases early, before they progress to lethal stages, improving quality of life, lowering health care costs and, most importantly, saving lives.”

Dr. Baowei Fei is a scientist and cancer scholar whose work is transforming medical imaging and cancer care. A professor in the Department of Bioengineering in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science and in the Department of Radiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Fei works in hyperspectral imaging, which has numerous medical and biological applications. His group developed quantitative imaging and image-guided intervention technology — a molecular imaging-directed, 3D ultrasound-guided biopsy system that improves upon 2D systems by allowing for earlier detection of potentially cancerous cells.

Fei’s training and experience include biomedical engineering, computer science, radiology and patient care. His research has led to quantitative bioimaging technologies that benefit human health, specifically in the areas of prostate cancer and head and neck cancers, as well as in heart disease. Fei led the first clinical trial of positron emission tomography (PET) combined with ultrasound fusion targeted biopsy of the prostate, contributing to improved prostate cancer detection and patient care. His research interests also include augmented reality, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine.

Prior to coming to UT Dallas in 2018, Fei was an associate professor with tenure in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences and Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at Emory University, where he was director of both the Precision Imaging Research Program and Quantitative Bioimaging Laboratory. From 2009 to 2018, he served on the faculty of the joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Fei received his doctoral and MS degrees and completed his post-doctoral training at Case Western Reserve University.

In 2017-2020, Fei serves as a conference chair for the International Conference of SPIE Medical Imaging: Image-Guided Procedures, Robotic Interventions and Modeling. Fei served as chair for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) study section on early-phase clinical trials in imaging and image-guided interventions and co-chair for multiple NIH and Department of Defense study section panels.
In 2013, Fei was selected as a Distinguished Investigator by the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research. In 2010, he received the Young Investigator Award from the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and has been recognized as a Distinguished Scholar by the Georgia Cancer Coalition. Fei is a fellow of American Institute for Medical and Biomedical Engineering and a fellow of the International Society for Optics and Photonics.

He serves as an associate editor for Medical Physics, an editorial board member of five international journals and a reviewer for more than 20 biomedical imaging journals. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal papers, full-length conference proceedings and book chapters.
