Comet Cupboard Food Drive

In the wake of the recent economic downturn, many college students are struggling not only to pay tuition but also to put food on the table. UT Dallas is one of a growing number of universities nationwide that has responded to this need by opening a food pantry on campus. The Comet Cupboard opened its doors in October 2012 to help students with necessary food and personal care items.

Since the Comet Cupboard needs food donations to keep the shelves stocked, the Sociology Club is sponsoring a “Coins and Cans” donation drive from April 1 to April 15. Students, faculty and staff may bring monetary and/or food donations to the Green Hall Advising office in GR 2.220 or drop off donations upstairs in GR 3.120.

Although no national data is currently available on the number of college students with food insecurity, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported on one local study that found 39 percent of students had skipped meals or gone hungry for lack of money. Respondents also reported they were unable to afford balanced meals.
