The School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences is home to eight research centers that engage in groundbreaking research on a variety of social science topics. These centers, supported by the UT Dallas Office of Research, are a critical part of our strategy to move UT Dallas forward to Tier 1 status.


Center for Crime and Justice Studies

The mission of the Center for Crime and Justice Studies is to advance our understanding of crime and criminal justice through collaboration between criminal justice scholars and criminal justice professionals, to inform criminal justice policy makers and the public on "what works" in criminal justice through transparent scientific and objective research, and to help refine the criminal justice process to reduce the costs of justice while maintaining public safety and public demands for punishment.

Center for Geospatial Research in Global Health Policy

The Center for Geospatial Research in Global Health Policy (CGG) is a research, data support and training center committed to facilitate geospatial research activities supporting global health policy. The center is involved in a number of global health research and training projects emphasizing geospatial applications to global health concerns, in collaboration with various domestic and international partners. It also maintains an interactive data archive containing comprehensive information on geospatial data sets covering major global health topics to support researchers and students.

Center for Global Collective Action

The center coordinates research and educational efforts in the study of global collective action, situations in which two or more countries must coordinate actions to achieve a mutually desirable outcome that cannot be achieved by either country alone. Global collective actions address problems such as curbing ozone shield depletion, standards of financial practices, eradication of diseases, control of greenhouse gas emissions, and elimination of transnational terrorism. The center works to identify mentors, assemble researchers to study these issues, conduct workshops and advance publication of publicly beneficial research on these topics.

Institute of Public Affairs

The Institute of Public Affairs helps Metroplex cities and non-profit organizations examine and solve a variety of current and emerging challenges. The institute focuses its efforts on providing research, consulting and training services to local governments and organizations. It engages graduate students directly with local governments, brings together policy leaders to find solutions to shared problems, and enables the University to contribute its expertise to efforts aimed at solving important area-wide problems.

Institute for Urban Policy Research

The mission of this institute is to improve decision making in the critical areas that influence economic growth and the distribution of income and wealth in regional and sub-regional economies. The center aims to integrate the tools and theories of economics and decision science with those from psychology, sociology, public health and other social sciences in order to better understand the dynamic and spatial structure of the Metroplex. The institute helps Dallas-area businesses, governments and nonprofits identify opportunities for investments, volunteer activities, philanthropic giving and public policies that positively affect the economic condition of neighborhoods and the region. It provides an institution where bankers, investors, real estate brokers, policy makers, students and community leaders can go to seek answers to questions that directly impact local economic development.

The Negotiations Center

People negotiate every day, with business partners, representatives of firms and governments, and with family members. Scholars study negotiation from multiple disciplines, including economics (bargaining theory), political science, public affairs and policy (international and governmental bargaining), psychology (negotiation processes), law (mediation/arbitration and pretrial bargaining) and business (negotiation between firms and between firms and customers). UT Dallas' Negotiations Center is focused on promoting research that crosses the boundaries of these disciplines. It sponsors a regular seminar series featuring world-class scholars, offers executive education sessions and other courses and hosts conferences that involve multiple disciplines and real-world issues. The center's goal is to bring together scholars from different disciplines who study related topics and use the collected insights to inform negotiation practice through education and outreach.

Texas Schools Project

Texas Schools Project is one of the premier university-based education research institutions in the country. Leading scholars in Texas and throughout the country use the center's resources to focus on relevant, policy-related questions that affect students in Texas and the nation. Much of the work within the Texas Schools Project relates to teacher quality, English language learners, college preparatory curriculum, and improving transitions to and success in postsecondary education.

UT Dallas Education Research Center

The University of Texas at Dallas Education Research Center supports independent, high-quality research by providing data access and related services to those conducting studies designed to benefit education in Texas. Established in 2006 as a result of state legislation, the UT Dallas Education Research Center maintains unparalleled individual-level administrative pre-kindergarten to college-level data and workforce data. This allows researchers to study the progress of Texas students throughout their education and into the workforce.
