University to Help Campus Community Go Tobacco-Free with Events

As UT Dallas prepares to transition to a tobacco-free campus effective June 1, the Office of Administration and Wellness Committee will host two tobacco-cessation events for the campus community.

Breathe Easy, a tobacco-cessation education event, will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, in the Student Union Galaxy Rooms (SU 2.602). The event, open to faculty, staff and students, will feature information booths as well as a lunch-and-learn presentation from the American Lung Association. To reserve a free lunch, email [email protected] by Wednesday, March 22.

Also, a Tobacco Cessation Pilot Class will be offered from April 18 to May 30. The seven-week, eight-session class follows the American Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking cessation program to help participants end their smoking habits. Registration is free and open to faculty, staff and students. Sign up at the Breathe Easy event or online through LEO in the Galaxy Portal.

Volunteers Needed for Commencement, Memories on the Mall

Staff members interested in volunteering at the Spring 2017 Commencement Ceremonies and Memories on the Mall are invited to sign up online by Friday, April 28. Commencement duties include serving as greeters, ushers, and/or shuttle guides. Duties for Memories on the Mall include distributing alumni tote bags to graduates and serving refreshments. Available shifts include:

Thursday, May 11

  • 7:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Volunteers will be contacted to confirm shift scheduling after signing up. Spring commencement starts with Honors Convocation on Wednesday, May 10. There will be eight graduation ceremonies in all, with the last one scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, May 12.

Assistant Director of LGBT+ Programs to Receive Award

Matt Johns

Matt Johns, assistant director of LGBT+ programs at the Galerstein Women’s Center, has been selected to receive a national award for his contribution to gender and sexuality issues in higher education.

Johns will receive the Service to Student Affairs Award from the Gender & Sexuality Knowledge Community of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) at a conference Tuesday, March 14, in San Antonio.

Staff, Faculty Step Up for Heart Health During Annual Walk

More than 70 faculty and staff members participated in the UT System Heart Walk on Feb. 10. The 10-minute walk is held annually to promote awareness for heart health.

Wellness Center to Host Spring into Fitness Open House

The SPN Wellness Center (SPN 1.700) will hold a Spring into Fitness Open House on Thursday, April 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Attendees will be able to try healthy snacks, enter drawings for giveaways, meet the SPN fitness instructors, get a free body composition analysis and a complimentary injury assessment from Airrosti, with reservation. Safe Zone Ally Training Set for April 10

The Office of Diversity and Community Engagement and the Galerstein Women's Center will present Safe Zone Ally Training at 10 a.m. Monday, April 10, in the Student Union Galaxy Rooms (SU 2.602). Ally Training provides a venue for LGBTQ people, their allies and other participants to express concerns, ask questions, and learn about issues affecting the LGBTQ campus and surrounding community. Total Rewards Statements Sum Up Salary, Perks Package

Campus Recycling Schedule Changes

The UT System provides “UT REWARD$ 4U — My Total Rewards Statement,” an account of each benefits-eligible UT Dallas employee’s compensation and benefits package.

The statement totals the annualized value of each employee’s salary plus longevity and other state and UT Dallas benefits. The statements are based on each individual's estimated earnings and benefit selections as of Dec. 1, and are updated annually.

The statements are available online:

  1. Navigate to the My UT Benefits website.
  2. Click the Single Sign On (SSO) option under “Login Using My.”
  3. Choose “The University of Texas at Dallas” from the drop-down list of campuses and click Select.
  4. Enter your UT Dallas Net ID and password and click on Login.
  5. Select the Total Compensation tab if you are not directed there automatically.

Book Drive National March into Literacy Month

This month, the Office of Student Volunteerism will be collecting new and gently used books to benefit the Friends of the Richardson Library (FOL) and Reading Partners, local nonprofits that promote reading, literacy and education.

Books for any age reader will be accepted, as well as textbooks, comic books, graphic novels, audio books, and foreign-language material.

Collection bins will be in the OSV office (SSA 14.431T), the McDermott Library lobby, the first-floor lobby of the Student Union, and the second-floor lobby near the elevators in the Administration Building. Donations will be accepted through March 31.

McDermott Library Schedules Workshops

Golf Tournament to Benefit Student Scholarships
The 24th Annual UT Dallas Scholarship Tournament is set for Friday, April 28, at Firewheel Golf Park in Garland. Visit the tournament website or call the UT Dallas Office of Administration at 972-883-2213 to get more information, register or make a donation. In preparation for the event, The Practice Tee invites students, faculty and staff to UT Dallas Day from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 7.

Spring Into Motion — Get Fit and Have Fun This Spring
Registration is now open for the UT System Activity Challenge, which will begin Monday, April 3, and is open to all UT Select members age 18 and older. For more information, visit utlivingwell.com.

Natural Slim Program
The UT System Office of Employee Benefits is offering Naturally Slim for employees enrolled in the UT Select medical health plan. Participants will learn how to lose weight and improve their health. Online applications will be accepted until Friday, March 17. The program begins Monday, April 3.
