Students Discovering What’s Brewing at the Library on First Wednesdays

More and more students are learning what to expect on the first floor of the Eugene McDermott Library on the first Wednesday of each month: Coffee Time!

Since the library’s Information Literacy Services department began offering free coffee, helping strengthen the sense of community between the library and the student body about a year ago, the number of students participating has more than doubled.

“Chris Edwards and the other librarians have done a great job of promoting and staffing the monthly coffees with consistency, which I think has built up the expectation of when we’ll be there and helped increase our numbers. We also added some fun collaborations and themes on the coffees throughout the year like ‘Fuel for Finals’ to generate interest, and we always take feedback from students to see how we can improve,” said Dr. Tiffany Norris, Associate Library Director.

Events such as the monthly coffees, said Norris, give students an opportunity to socialize, network and have a chance to meet with librarians in a more casual setting and discover the spaces, resources and assistance that is available to them.

“Having events like this gives students, staff and librarians the chance to get to know one another in a relaxed beautiful space and helps students discover the resources and services that are available to them,” Norris said.

Coffee hour with McDermott librarians is held between 10:30 a.m. and noon on the first Wednesday of the month in the atrium space outside MC 1.204 on the first floor of the library.
