The McDermott Library is Here to Help You Work and Learn Remotely
Although the library is closed until further notice to mitigate the spread of Coronavirus, the Eugene McDermott Library continues to offer students and faculty services and support for learning and teaching remotely.
Even though library staff members are not working on campus, there are still many ways they can provide expert help and services (through email, live chat, Microsoft Teams and online resources) as they transition to learning remotely.
Circulation Desk
During this time our staff will be available to help guide faculty and students who need help with instruction services, access to resources and any other assistance through email libinstructionservices@utdallas.edu Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the library’s Chat service, staffed by McDermott librarians, will also be available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and staff will respond to all offline messages as well.
Materials that are checked out beyond their due dates during limited or suspended library operations will have special consideration. You may log into your account through the library’s website to check on your materials at any time. Email circ@utdallas.edu if you have specific questions.
Online tools and resources
UT Dallas students and faculty can access most of the library’s resources electronically through Discover, the library’s online system, and staff members are available to help users find exactly what they’re looking for. They can help navigate search and other remote tools to access materials and services through our live Chat service, which can be found in the blue button located on the right side of the library’s website.
Along with millions of articles and books available online, library users can also find the best library databases for your research and numerous collection of journals.
You can also find Research Guides developed by McDermott librarians that give tips and recommended online resources by topic. To help students who are not comfortable with virtual learning, the library has also created a guide on Distance Education.
Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary Loan (ILL), a service the library offers allowing patrons to request materials the McDermott Library does not have, is extending electronic delivery services to undergraduate students. However, the delivery of physical materials has been suspended indefinitely. Students may contact ILL staff through email at ill@utdallas.edu.
Course Reserves
Professors may go to the library’s Course Reserves page or email the library’s course reserves coordinator at libresv@utdallas.edu to see what materials the library has available for students to use in their coursework or if they have any questions about the library’s new Course Reserves system. The new system makes creating, accessing and managing course resource lists much easier and more efficient.
Suggest a Title
We can order electronic books if we do not already own them. If available as an e-Book, the process should be seamless and the book would be available to you in less than a weekday.
Research Services
McDermott librarians are continuing to provide services as fully as possible during the Coronavirus pandemic and will meet with students and faculty in any virtual way they can. Here are some of the ways to connect:
Launch a live mobile Chat with a librarian by clicking on the blue tab located on the right side of the library’s website. Chat sessions are currently available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., but librarians will respond to offline messages as well.
If you are not already connected on Microsoft Teams, sign up or ask a librarian to help you sign up and they can collaborate with you remotely with questions about library resources, open access, copyright, research help or any other library assistance you need to succeed.
Reach out to your library liaison (one for each school) who can offer not only virtual consultation and instruction, but can also provide expertise in specific areas. If you’re unsure about who represents the school, program or subject you’re interested in visit our liaison page.
McDermott Library instruction librarians can provide classroom instruction by request through a virtual classroom in eLearning. A faculty member simply sends a student a link to a librarian who will join them to demonstrate library resources in real-time online during class just as they would in person.
