Scope and Content
This collection contains notes, lists, biographies, reports, squadron histories and rosters, victory and casualty lists, war diaries, aircraft data, interviews, microfilm, squadron record books, photographs, negatives, slides, moving images, correspondence, unpublished manuscript, research notes, maps, magazines, journals, clippings, drawings, and other information used by Ola A. Sater to conduct research on World War I aviation topics. The Ola A. Sater Collection is housed in forty-one manuscript boxes, one microfilm box, one CD box, and three non-standard boxes of various sizes totaling 22.33 linear ft.
The collection arrived in fair condition. At first the collection was processed with only a few folders in a manuscript box causing the materials to bend and slouch. Access was limited, since there was only a rudimentary container list available. Because of these circumstances, the entire collection was reprocessed. Original order could not be determined and arrangement was imposed by the processing archivist. The curator identified eight series with the first series being the O.A. Sater Biographical Information and Research Notes Series. This series contains notes, lists, biographies, reports, and other information used by Ola Sater to conduct research on World War I aviation topics.
The second series is the World War I Aviation Activities (By Country) Series, which is further organized into four subseries: 1. France, 2. Germany and Austro-Hungary, 3. The United Kingdom, and 4. The United States of America.
Subseries 1. includes squadron histories, victory and casualty lists, aircraft data, and other information related to French aviation in World War I.
Subseries 2. contains squadron histories, victory and casualty lists, aircraft data, and other information related to German and Austro-Hungarian aviation in World War I.
Subseries 3. consists of squadron histories, victory and casualty lists, aircraft data, and other information related to British aviation in World War I. A few documents provide histories of Australian and New Zealand squadron form World War II.
Subseries 4. includes squadron histories, victory and casualty lists, aircraft data, and other information related to American aviation in World War I. It covers both the activities of the United States Air Service (USAS) as well as American’s flying for other powers involved in the war.
The third series is the RFC/RAF No. 56 Squadron Series. Materials in this series contain squadron rosters, casualty and victory lists, histories, interviews views with pilots, microfilm copies of the squadron record book, and photographs related to RFC/RAF No. 56 Squadron. It also contains a manuscript copy of, as well as correspondence relating to Fifty Six, an unpublished work written by Ola Sater and Alex Revell.
The fourth series is the Correspondence Series consisting of correspondence between Ola Sater and various friends, acquaintances, colleagues, World War I researchers, and others. The largest portion of the correspondence is between Ola Sater and Raymond Collishaw, a World War I British Ace, and Alex Revell.
The fifth series is the Magazines, Journal, Newspaper Clippings, Drawings Series. This series includes articles from a number of World War I related publications, newspaper obituaries of World War I flyers, aviation artwork, world aircraft blueprints, model plans, and three-way drawings.
The sixth series is the Photographs Series, which is further organized in five subseries: 1. Central Powers, 2. The United Kingdom, 3. The United States of America, 4. Other Photographs, and 5. Slides and Negatives.
Subseries 1. includes photographs of German and Austro-Hungarian aircraft, pilots, ground personnel, and squadrons.

Subseries 2. consists of a number of reel tapes of conversations and interviews with Paul Winslow and Alex Revell. It also contains a number of 8mm, black and white films depicting various World War I and II people, and things in action.
The eighth series is the Oversize Material Series, which includes materials too large to fit in other parts of the collection. It contains several large photographs, a map of World War I airfields in the North Texas area, and photographs of British, French, German, and Italian aircraft.
