Sahadath M.J. Mowery and her husband, Colby, each had their parents in attendance as they graduated with master’s degrees Friday at the Naveen Jindal School of Management commencement ceremony.
His parents are local; hers, quite the opposite.

Sahadath’s family traveled from the West African nation of Benin to attend the ceremony for her second graduate degree earned at UT Dallas. She met Colby Mowery in Chicago at church while she was a student at DePaul University and he attended Moody Bible Institute.

Sahadath graduated with a master’s degree in international management studies. Colby received his master’s in business administration.

It was a more sedate graduation ceremony this time around for David Dowdle who earned his master of accounting degree last Friday. In 2015, his son was born the week before he received his undergraduate degree also from UT Dallas.

“Finals week that year was tough to say the least,” he said.

This time around, Dowdle’s son, now 2½ , stayed at day care while his wife, Kristi, attended the graduation ceremony.

Dowdle, of Frisco, already works as a senior associate in financial advisory services for Montgomery Coscia Greilich accounting firm in Plano.
He said the thing he will miss most about attending school here are the teachers. “They were not only my mentors, but my friends.”

Graduate Chiara Zamboni moved to Texas from Italy four years ago. For her graduation from the Naveen Jindal School of Management, she donned a headpiece with special meaning in her home country.

“When we graduate in Italy, we have to wear a crown made of bay leaves and berries,” she said.

The crown carries historical significance, Zamboni said. In Italian tradition, the crown represents victory and success — Julius Caesar was said to wear one after winning a battle.

Zamboni, who graduated summa cum laude, plans to take a month off to go skiing in the Alps before starting her career in marketing.
