Pomp and Circumstance Reset for Summer Grads

August Commencement Dropped; Degree Recipients Can Pick Fall or Spring

Feb. 29, 2008

The Registrar’s Office is trying to get the word out that starting this year, the University will no longer hold summer commencement ceremonies.

Degrees will continue to be awarded at the end of the summer term. Students who anticipate the completion of their degree requirements at that time will still need to apply for summer graduation by the posted deadlines.

Summer grads will then have the option — depending on guidelines and their preference — of participating in fall or spring commencement ceremonies.

The official summer 2008 graduation date is Aug. 23.  Diplomas will be mailed six to eight weeks after this date to candidates who have no holds on their accounts.

Most universities do not hold summer graduation.  UT Dallas’ summer ceremony was eliminated because of time constraints and in the interest of improving the quality of the event.

The Registrar's Office has set up a special Web page detailing the guidelines and deadlines for summer graduation, as well as options for participation in a commencement ceremony.
