Team Takes Debate Program to New Heights

April 6, 2009

The team of Brian Rubaie and Andrew Baker took the UT Dallas debate program further than it had ever been before last month when the pair tied for 17th in the National Debate Tournament at UT Austin.

Rubaie and Baker, UT Dallas’ sole team to qualify for the tournament, lost to the top team from Michigan State in a 3-2 decision. The pair's advance to the elimination rounds marked the first time that University team has made it that far in the national tournament.

Rubaie received an individual award for 16th overall speaker, which is the first time that a UT Dallas debater has received a speaker award at the tournament.

The University of Kansas emerged as overall winner out of a field of 78 entries.

“Brian and Andrew competed very well against the top programs in the country at the toughest tournament in the country,” said Chris Burk, director of the UT Dallas debate program. “Since the entire team returns next season, we anticipate a continuation of our climb in the national standings.”
