NCAA Taps Athletic Director for Golf Championship

May 8, 2009

Chris Gage, director of intercollegiate athletics at UT Dallas, will spend May 10-16 in Port Saint Lucie, Fla., as director of the NCAA Division III National Men’s Golf Championship Tournament.

Gage, who has been UT Dallas’ athletic director since 2003 and a member of the NCAA Division III National Men’s Golf Committee since 2006, is completing his first year as chairman of the committee. The committee oversees the competition and administration of the national tournament, to be played at the PGA Village Golf Complex beginning Sunday.

Gage’s committee has spent the last year evaluating, selecting and providing advance preparation of a site for the tournament. In addition, his committee meets periodically via conference calls to develop criteria and evaluate potential teams and individual golfers that might qualify for the tournament. In the last few weeks, the committee made the final decision on qualifying golfers and extended invitations to the tournament.

Thirty-six Division III men’s golf teams and five individual golfers were invited to compete.

Following completion of the tournament, the committee will reconvene at the NCAA National Headquarters in Indianapolis this July to critique and evaluate their selection process and the tournament itself.

Gage has one more year remaining on his four-year term with the committee.
