And Tsunami That Killed Many Thousands

Dr. Richard M. Mitterer, a long-time geosciences professor at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), will deliver a lecture Tuesday, March 29, on the Sumatra-Andaman Island earthquake three months ago and the deadly tsunami that resulted from it.

Mitterer’s talk, which be held from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. in the auditorium of UTD’s School of Management building, is free and open to the public and is part of a memorial observance for the more than 200,000 people killed by the Dec. 26 tsunami.

Mitterer, who was one of the original members of the faculty when UTD was created in 1969 and who has taught an undergraduate course in oceanography since 1975, will discuss the geological forces that caused the earthquake and tsunami and the incredible level of destruction that occurred.

The lecture is being co-sponsored by the  International Student Services Office and the Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies at UTD.
