The Wind Ensemble will be among the groups performing this weekend at the Student Arts Festival.
With the semester winding down, the School of Arts and Humanities has planned a weekend of events for students to showcase their work.
The Student Arts Festival features the work of more than 600 students from more than 40 courses. The five-day fest offers audiences the opportunity to roam from one building to another, taking in classical, jazz, dance, guitar, piano and vocal performances, as well as an art exhibition and reception.
Among the many events during the weekend is the Annual Choral Concert at 8 p.m. Saturday in the University Theatre.
This year’s concert, “The Art of the Song,” traces the development of choral music from the 13th century to modern times. The concert features works from classical composers including Mozart, Haydn, Debussy and Schubert.
University Theatre Directions
Access to the University Theatre and the Jonsson Performance Hall is limited because of construction. Temporary directions to both venues can be found online.
A temporary walkway leading to the University Theatre has been constructed and can be accessed from the second floor of Jonsson from the doorway that faces south.
Performing in the concert is the UT Dallas Chamber Singers directed by Kathryn Evans, an Arts and Humanities senior lecturer. The ensemble of 20 to 24 singers performs a broad range of chamber vocal literature, including both sacred and secular music spanning the Renaissance to the contemporary periods of music history and modern jazz arrangements. The ensemble performs regularly on campus, including performances at Best of Broadway and the Annual Holiday Sing during the fall semester.
Performing alongside the Chamber Singers will be the UT Dallas Community Chorale directed by Derrick Brookins, who teaches at both UT Dallas and Plano Senior High School. The Chorale is a 40-voice group that provides alumni, faculty, staff and members of the community an opportunity to perform choral music.
Other events planned for the weekend include an art reception in the Visual Arts Building, a dance showcase and a video game design showcase, among others. A full schedule of events can be found on the School of Arts and Humanities events website.
