First-Generation Celebration Week at The University of Texas at Dallas will offer virtual events Nov. 8-13 to highlight the success of students who are the first in their families to complete a college degree in the U.S.

The online events will coincide with National First-Generation Celebration Day on Nov. 8, which celebrates the success of first-generation college students, faculty and staff on campuses across the country and recognizes the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

“We are excited and proud to highlight our first-generation students with this special week of activities,” said Courtney Brecheen MPA’09, PhD’17, senior associate dean of undergraduate education. “The celebration is a great supplement to the year-round engagement we coordinate with campus partners to support first-generation students. We have organized educational and social activities for students, faculty and staff and opportunities for our first-generation campus community to show their first-gen pride.”

The week will feature a keynote address from NFL Network sports anchor Kyle Montgomery, a first-generation student and professional who is frequently featured on ESPN. Events at UT Dallas will also include profiles of first-generation students, a speed-friending event, a lunch-and-learn with University leadership and the announcement of a new scholarship.

A resource fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 13 will feature games, raffles and a #proudtobefirst virtual photo booth on Instagram. Learn more about registering for the week’s events.
