French philosopher Bernard Stiegler, whose work explores political, sociological and ethical questions related to technology, will give a lecture with a Q&A session in the McDermott Conference Room (Arts and Technology Building) Friday, April 15, at 3 p.m.

Stiegler is the director of the Georges Pompidou Institute of Research and Innovation, which aims to anticipate changes in cultural resources and consumption brought about by new technologies.

He has applied his research and development ideas to conservation of audio-visual heritage, diffusion and representation of contemporary music, and the evolution of the relationships between cultural institutions such as museums, their works, and the public.

Stiegler is also the founder and director of the cultural and philosophical association Ars Industrialis, created in 2005. Through various publications as well as its Internet activity, this association offers critical reflection on the “technologies of the mind” – in particular, telecommunications and computer technology – and examines the underlying economic realities in these fields.

He is also an associate professor at the Goldsmith College in London and at the University of Technology of Compiègne.

Stiegler holds a PhD in philosophy from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (1993), under the direction of Jacques Derrida.
