Colleagues at the Eugene McDermott Library and across The University of Texas at Dallas are mourning the loss of the library’s extended hours supervisor, Cameron Randle, who died early Thanksgiving morning.

An avid cyclist, Randle was hit by a car while riding his bike. He was 33.

Randle began working at the McDermott Library as a library assistant in fall 2015, and was later promoted to supervisor.

Dr. Ellen Safley, dean of the McDermott Library, said: “Cameron was a valued member of our team, and we are trying to cope with this senseless death. Our thoughts are with his family and friends who have suffered a great loss. We will remember his professionalism and his kind and generous personality and his great smile.”

Dr. Tiffany Norris, associate library director for research services, said Randle worked the overnight shift from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m., but maintained a willingness to help library patrons despite his difficult schedule.

“Cameron brought an easygoing attitude to his team, had a fantastic sense of humor and enjoyed his work here. He will be missed by all who had the chance to work with him,” Norris said.

A native of Waco, Texas, Randle grew up in North Texas and spent several years in Tampa, Florida, where his father, Ervin Randle, played in the NFL. In March 2003, he joined the Army and served in South Korea and Egypt. In 2007, he was honorably discharged at Fort Lee, Virginia.

In 2015, Randle earned a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in journalism from Texas A&M Corpus Christi, where he discovered his love of biking.

Randle also found his passion in books, music and classic movies. He is survived by his wife, Lindsey.

Services are planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel, 2525 S. Central Expressway in Allen, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
