University Celebrates Summer Doctoral Graduates at Hooding Ceremony

Dr. Ramakrishna Mulukutla proudly showed off his PhD in geospatial information sciences from the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences to his family and friends.
Dr. Sarah da Rocha Valente was hooded by her sister Rubia, who earned a PhD in public policy and political economy from UT Dallas in 2013, and Dr. David Patterson, Hillel A. Feinberg Chair in Holocaust Studies. Valente received a PhD in humanities from the School of Arts and Humanities.
Dr. Olufunlola Arowolo relished the moment as she is hooded by her parents, Elizabeth (left) and Oladele Arowolo, who both have PhDs. Olufunlola Arowolo received her doctorate in public policy and political economy from the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences.
Dr. Erin Horne, receiving her hood from Dr. Juan González (left), dean of graduate education, and Dr. Michael Rugg, co-director of the Center for Vital Longevity, was all smiles after earning her PhD in cognition and neuroscience from the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences.
Dr. Charles Chika, with Dr. Juan González (left), dean of graduate education, and Dr. Bruce Novak, dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, received a PhD in mathematics.
Dr. Rodolfo Antonio Rodriguez Davila celebrated with his family after the ceremony. He earned a PhD in materials science and engineering from the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science.
Dr. Bujie Du (left) and Dr. Xingya Jiang, who both worked under mentor Dr. Jie Zheng and were married in 2017, earned PhDs in chemistry. Du will be a postdoctoral researcher at MIT working under Dr. Robert Langer. Jiang is waiting to find out if he got a postdoctoral position at Harvard Medical School.
Surrounded by family and friends, 65 doctoral graduates capped their academic journeys at The University of Texas at Dallas this month. One by one, they walked across the stage in the Edith O’Donnell Arts and Technology Building Lecture Hall on Aug. 9 and received their doctoral degrees after years of commitment, dedication and hard work. The hoods were placed over each graduate’s head by a faculty mentor or another mentor with a doctoral degree. UT Dallas offers 30 PhD programs and one professional doctorate program.
After opening remarks by UT Dallas President Richard C. Benson, Dr. Alex Piquero, Ashbel Smith Professor of criminology and associate dean of graduate programs in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences, delivered the ceremony’s address. Piquero congratulated the graduates on their hard work and shared a story about his own career trajectory. He also advised them to work hard, embrace new things and remain true to their moral compass.
