Funding Surges for UT Dallas Computer Science Research

Computer science researchers at UT Dallas have won several million dollars in research grants in recent months for work to be done in a range of areas, including network planning, data privacy, sensors and health care.

“Our proactive efforts in bolstering research funding to computer science faculty are definitely bearing fruit,” said Dr. Gopal Gupta, head of the computer science department. “Our recent focus on collaborative multidisciplinary research has been one important factor, and the dean of engineering and computer science, Dr. Mark Spong, has been particularly encouraging and supportive of our faculty members’ grant proposals.” 

Collaborators on the projects include researchers from the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Purdue University; The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; and Southern Methodist University

The surge in funding not only supports one of the University’s strategic initiatives – strengthening research productivity, the engine that drives innovation – but could also contribute to Gupta’s objective to increase entrepreneurial activities that flow from his department’s computer science research. 

“I am confident these projects will produce cutting-edge research results, some of which may well lead to companies being founded a few years down the road by the students and faculty involved,” he said. 

The department is also making efforts to bring entrepreneurship education to as many computer science students as possible. Already, for instance, a software entrepreneurship component is being added to computer science and software engineering students’ senior design classes, which culminate students’ education. 

There’s only one downside that Gupta sees to the recent spike in funding awards. 

“Our bar for next year keeps rising,” he recently told computer science faculty and staff. “We all will have to work hard to exceed it.”
