With graduation just a few months away, seniors are getting serious about checking out career options.
To help refine their search, the UT Dallas Career Center will host a series of career expos in coming weeks to help students connect with more than 200 employers from corporations, small businesses, school districts, nonprofit organizations and government agencies.
Cassius Miller was first in line at the fall Career Expo. “I wanted to make sure I got a good parking spot, and also, you know, the early bird gets the worm,” Miller said.
“Attending a career expo gives students the opportunity to learn about companies which are hiring and to meet face-to-face with recruiters or hiring managers,” said Lisa Garza, director of the Career Center. “It is a great way to get a lot of information all in one place, as well as a chance to practice networking skills.”
The Career Center has a waiting list for recruiters who want to come this year; space in the Activity Center was booked by the beginning of January, Garza said.
The expos are open only to currently enrolled students and alumni who have earned degrees from UT Dallas.
Last year, about 2,785 people attended — 34 percent undergraduates and 66 percent graduate attendees.
Garza encouraged students to plan ahead by viewing the list of registered employers to see what types of positions and majors the companies are seeking.
“By preparing ahead of time, students can target the employers they’ve already identified as a possible fit for them and will be able to use their time at the event more wisely,” Garza said.
