The Connect IT
January/February, 2016 utdallas.edu/oit/newsletter/

An important initiative is currently underway to identify and remove vulnerabilities within UT Dallas websites. Since the entire world can connect to our websites, it is critical that we remove anything that puts UT Dallas at risk.

The Information Security Office (ISO), Office of Information Technology, University Web Services, and several technical leaders on campus have been meeting to discuss how they can protect UT Dallas websites. The goal is to gather information about vulnerabilities and educate developers.

ISO will start with a discovery scan just as it did for wwwdev.utdallas.edu. The scans will begin on January 28th, but expect communication in advance to ensure any questions are answered and proper parties are notified. These scans will be broken up logically to avoid scanning the entire web environment at one time. After each scan, ISO will provide a report to the technical staff who maintains that web space. Any vulnerabilities found will be validated and then re-scans will be performed to confirm success. Upon completion of all discovery scans, ISO will have a full map of the www.utdallas.edu environment.

Sometimes testing can be disruptive, so we have taken a deliberate approach to minimize such disruptions. This effort is critical to protecting UT Dallas and more details will be shared at each step. Please contact the OIT Helpdesk at ext. 2911 if you have any questions.
