Campaign Lights the Way to Tier One

On a crystal clear October evening, students, faculty and community supporters joined me in watching pyrotechnics illuminate the sky above campus as we celebrated Realize the Vision: The Campaign for Tier One and Beyond.

The October celebration for the Realize the Vision campaign culminated with pyrotechnics and a laser light show that could be seen for miles.

The perfectly timed display reminded me of the carefully coordinated effort that preceded this ceremonial finale. The success of UT Dallas' first comprehensive campaign rests on meticulous planning, behind-the-scenes teamwork and the support of thousands of alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the University. Thank you for your role in this undertaking, as a donor, as a student, as a member of our staff and faculty, or as an interested observer. We could not have done it without you.

I'm in awe of the dedication and generosity of those who helped UT Dallas eclipse the $200 million goal. So far we've raised more than $265 million to help students, boost research and strengthen our endowment.

The results:

On a broader scale, donor support helped double the University's overall endowment to $387 million as of Aug. 31.

In addition to University friends, corporations, faculty and other donors, our former graduates have been key to this accomplishment. The number of alumni contributing to the University doubled over the course of the campaign.

More importantly, a new sense of affiliation seems to be growing among our alumni. This enhanced sense of community seems to mirror the transformation of our physical campus, which so many of you have come home to see for yourselves. The UT Dallas family is expanding, and our bonds grow stronger as we deepen our commitment to UTD. We continue to be guided by our founders' aspirations to create the "MIT of the Southwest." That vision stands at the core of our existence and points to our brilliant future.

The Realize the Vision campaign, which concludes Dec. 31, is a critical element in living up to our founders' goal. If you haven't yet had a chance to participate, we invite you to take part in helping us write this chapter in our history.

Comets, light the way.
