Rat Biomethodology Workshop | RL/NSERL B.106 (meet in LARC break room) | August 16th, 2018, 1:00 PM | Rodent Surgery & Biomethodology Workshops

This Workshop begins at 1:00pm and ends at 4:00pm.

Please note: There is a limited amount of space in this Workshop, and your attendance is mandatory once you have registered. If you are unable to attend this Workshop, please contact Cynthia Tralmer as soon as possible. If you are registered for this Workshop and do not attend, your PI will be notified.

The following topics will be covered in this Workshop:

·         Methods of handling and restraint of rats,

·         Methods of substance administration – Intramuscular, intracardiac, intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, intravenous, oral gavage, etc.,

·         Methods of blood collection,

·         Methods of sedation, anesthesia and analgesia,

​·         Methods of euthanasia.


You may attend either the Mouse Biomethodology Workshop or the Rat Biomethodology Workshop. If you register for both Workshops, your registration will be removed from one of the Workshops.

Principles of Rodent Surgery, Anesthesia, Analgesia & Peri-operative Care Seminar | RL/NSERL 1.744 Conference Room | August 15th, 2018, 1:00 PM | Rodent Surgery & Biomethodology Workshops

This Workshop begins at 1:00pm and ends at 4:30pm.

Please note: There is a limited amount of space in this Workshop, and your attendance is mandatory once you have registered. If you are unable to attend this Workshop, please contact Cynthia Tralmer as soon as possible. If you are registered for this Workshop and do not attend, your PI will be notified.

The following topics will be covered in this Workshop:

·         Use of volatile anesthesia (induction, maintenance, physiological monitoring, recovery),

·         Various anesthetics & analgesics and their use based on how long the rodent needs to be unconscious,

·         Post-surgical monitoring,

·         Use of analgesics before and after surgery, and what to look for after surgery to ensure the animal is recovering well,

·         Effects of the various anesthetics on body systems,

·         Aseptic rodent surgery concepts,

·         Surgical area setup & preparation,

·         Surgical aids (e.g. loops, magnification, restraining boards, etc.),

·         Tissue healing,

·         Instrument selection,

·         Effects of hypothermia & temperature control.
