This session will focus on federal rules and guidelines that govern federally sponsored projects: the OMB Circulars. We will discuss how these circulars affect and direct our internal processes on all levels - administration of a sponsored project, determination of allowability of costs, and audit or compliance concerns. We will also discuss how the central office and department can work together to smoothly manage awarded research projects. Presentation Slides

One of the first things a researcher should think about when considering applying for a research grant is... the budget. The Office of Sponsored Projects will outline important considerations and common pitfalls in the process of drafting a budget. We'll discuss how to determine if there are program specific expenses which are unallowable, and will walk participants through the process of obtaining institutional approvals. The Office of Post-award Management will focus on budgetary issues on a sponsored project cost center, such as cost transfers, over expenditures, and unallowable costs.

Proposal writing is different than article writing or dissertation writing. The Office of Research Development will discuss those differences and how to tweak your writing to accommodate them. And, since all good writing comes from good editing and good editing comes from avoiding conventional mistakes, we will review common errors most writers make. Presentation Slides

This course will provide an overview of the programs within the Office of Research Compliance (ORC), including: IRB (Institutional Review Board), IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee), Conflict of Interest, Export Control, Contact with Federal Officials, Laboratory Safety, and Responsible Conduct of Research. The course will include descriptions of each program and to which aspects of research they apply, researchers' requirements for compliance, functions of ORC support staff and when and how to access and engage support services related to each program.
