It’s strange to say, but it seems that the community we served gave us more than we gave them. Our appreciation dinner happened to coincide with a community potluck, so the two were merged. The result: an unprocessed snapshot of the people —we saw it not only as guests, but experienced a piece of it. I sat and talked with an elderly man who spoke to me with the assumption that I had always lived here and would continue to do so indefinitely. He asked me if I’d seen his grandson dance at the powwow last week, and commented on how many pecans his neighbor’s tree was getting. I was wondering if he knew that I was just a visitor, that I’d never been to a powwow in my life, let alone been to the one last week. But at end, he surprised me and asked me where I was from. We each came away with a story.
