Helping Our Veterans on Campus

Welcome to the Veteran Services Center (VSC)! The VSC serves UT Dallas students who are veterans, dependents or currently serving in the military. The VSC promotes veteran-specific opportunities, including a new student sponsor program, professional development workshops, employer networking, graduation cord ceremony and Warrior SMART sessions. The center connects students to community and campus resources and provides the support veterans need to be successful while attending UT Dallas.

The UT Dallas Veteran Advisory Council (VAC) is comprised of staff and faculty committed to the success of student veterans. Members serve as a resource for the VSC regarding their respective departments and provide input for programs and services. Council members advocate for veterans on campus and assist in educating the UT Dallas community on veteran issues. The VAC has been tasked to develop a Green Zone program during the 2014-15 academic year. Green Zone is a military training campaign directed toward faculty and staff to familiarize them with the student veteran population. The training focuses on the transition experience and issues common to veterans returning to civilian life and college campuses. Be on the look-out for this ally program next spring!

On Veterans Day, November 11, the VSC in partnership with the Multicultural Center, Student Organization Center, Student Union & Activities Advisory Board, Eugene McDermott Library and the Pep Band will celebrate and recognize the contributions of veterans at 11:00 a.m. on the plinth. Additionally, veterans who are staff, faculty or students at UT Dallas are invited to attend a reception to honor their military service. This come-and-go event, sponsored by Raytheon, will be held at the VSC, located on the lower level of the Eugene McDermott Library (MC 1.204) from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

With many resources for our veteran students, Lisa McNeme, Assistant Director, encourages all to visit the website at and invites the UTD community to come by and visit in person. The VSC is open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on weekdays (until 5 p.m. on Fridays). You can call them at 972-883-4913.

The Wall That Heals

As we honor our veterans who serve in defense of freedom, please consider coming out to witness The Wall That Heals, a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This impressive mobile memorial has traveled throughout the United States, bringing healing to millions who are unable to visit the historical site in Washington, D.C. It offers the citizens of our nation the opportunity to reflect, remember, and honor current and fallen Vietnam veterans.

From Thursday, November 20 at sunrise until Sunday, November 23 at noon, UT Dallas will host the replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for public viewing 24 hours each day. The memorial will be located at the Eugene McDermott Library East Lawn, along Drive G. A special welcoming ceremony is set for Friday, November 21 at 10 a.m. This event is FREE to the public. Volunteers are needed to be on site to monitor the memorial throughout its stay in 2 hour shifts. If you would like to help, please contact the Veterans Service Center at  972-883-4913.
