Comets,

I want to welcome you back to campus in whatever form that may take for you. It goes without saying that we have experienced difficult times over the last several months. None of us could have anticipated how this pandemic would impact our communities and our lives.

I am writing to remind you that if we are going to get through this semester, we must all do our part. This means adhering to University social distancing and mask requirements. You have been asked to acknowledge that you understand the restrictions placed upon all of us. We all have a personal and social responsibility to follow return-to-campus protocols.

One of the most significant risk factors that could jeopardize that goal is student gatherings. We have received word that many students and student organizations are engaging in activities that are endangering the health and safety of others. Gatherings are taking place that have led to students being exposed to COVID-19. As a result, we have seen several positive cases and have required many students to either isolate or quarantine. This behavior cannot continue, as it jeopardizes the health and safety of our University community.

As such, effective immediately and until further notice, student organizations found to be conducting in-person events or gatherings of any size will be referred to the Office of Community Standards and Conduct and may be subject to suspension. Students found to be participating in events or gatherings or exhibiting behavior that could reasonably be expected to endanger the health and safety of the University community will be reported to the Office of Community Standards and Conduct and may face disciplinary action.

All of us are counting on each other to keep our campus community safe. The examples of Notre Dame, the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State have shown us how the behavior of a relatively small number of people can impact the operations of an entire institution. We cannot and do not want to find ourselves in a similar situation. If you feel the need to interact with others, you must follow social distancing and mask requirements. We remain hopeful that by everyone doing their part and committing to social responsibility, we will all stay well and have a great semester.

WHOOSH!
