Student Success Center

The CommLab provides students practical feedback and resources for improving oral and group presentations. By visiting the CommLab, students can gain valuable insight and develop the necessary skills to become successful speakers.

The CommLab:

  • Aims to develop individuals’ understanding of each aspect of the speech-making process, including topic selection, organization, supporting materials, nonverbal behaviors and practicing delivery.
  • Recreates the classroom experience and provides support for course projects and assignments.
  • Emphasizes interpersonal and group skills, oral presentation strategies and effective delivery.
  • Identifies key areas for improvement to provide students with a launch point for future assignments.
  • Creates a comfortable learning environment where each session is specifically tailored to the individual’s needs.
  • Does not discuss potential grades a visitor may earn, nor do we critique instructors, assignments or grading policies.

Media in the CommLab

The CommLab is equipped with a media center that includes a computer and projector for use in speeches. When you set up your appointment, please indicate if you are bringing a PowerPoint or other media to present and bring it with you on a flash drive. You can also email the files to [email protected] as back-up.

Virtual Tutoring

We now offer virtual tutoring appointments to make our services more accessible for all students. This allows some flexibility for students who aren’t always able to make it to campus for traditional face-to-face tutoring appointments. Here is everything you need to know:

How do I schedule my online CommLab appointment?

Make an appointment online at

When making an appointment, select CommLab as Category, and Comm Virtual Tutoring as Activity.

After scheduling the appointment, wait for your confirmation email. Click on the link in the email to fill out a short form and upload assignment.

What do I need to send to my tutor?

After scheduling your appointment, you’ll receive an email confirmation with a Qualtrics survey. Please answer the questions in the survey to give your tutor an idea of what you’d like help with. You’ll also attach your speech to the survey. If you have any questions during the process, you can send an email to [email protected]

What if I forget to take my survey?

If your tutor does not have your survey with your speech attached, you will be considered a no-show to your appointment.

When will I get feedback on my essay?

Your tutor will review your speech and write feedback during the scheduled appointment time. You will receive an email with your feedback at the end of the session. If your scheduled appointment is from 1:00pm-2:00pm, then you should expect an email by 2:00.
