Early Childhood (EC)-Grade 6: Core Subjects
This certification requires students to complete their degree plan as prescribed by their major as well as the course work listed below:
- 12 hours English coursework
- 11-12 hours science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses including laboratory are recommended)
- 6 hours history
- 6 hours government
- 12 hours mathematics
- 3 hours public speaking OR official documentation certifying professional effective oral communication and presentation skills
- 3 hours of fine arts
- 9 hours of electives
- ED 3314: American Public School
- PSY/ED 3339: Educational Psychology
- ED 4352: Reading I
- ED 4357: Diagnostic Reading
- ED 3345: Art, Music and Physical Development
- ED 4351: ESL for EC-12 Teachers
- LIT/ED 3315: Children’s Literature
- ED3340: Math Concepts For Teachers
The following courses are restricted and require official admission to the Teacher Certification Program:
- ED 3342 – Classroom Management, Grades EC-6 (including field based experience)
- ED 4363 – Reading II/English Language Arts Reading Methods
- ED 4343 – Science Methods
- ED 4344 – Mathematics Methods
- ED 4345 – Social Studies Methods
- ED 4693 – Clinical Teaching/Student Teaching, Grades EC-6 (14-16 weeks, Monday-Friday, full days)
- ED 4372 – Educational Technology
The following course is a highly recommended elective:
- BIS 4306: Strategies for Diversity in Education (Required course for Interdisciplinary Studies majors)
