On June 8, 2016, Dr Makarenkov and his colleagues took part in the ECS Research Experience summer camp organized by UTD Center for Computer Science Education & Outreach. Anthony Phung (UTD math undergraduate) delivered a lecture on mathematics of finite-time stability followed by experiments of Ivan Gudoshnikov (UTD math graduate), where high school kids had a chance to verify how finite-time stable controllers stabilize inverted pendula. In the second part of our afternoon, Tassilo Kuepper (a visiting professor from the University of Cologne) gave a lecture on how math helped to understand a mysterious phenomenon that occured to a clapper-bell system of Cologne Cathedral and where finite-time stability (through chattering) played a significant role too.
