I am retiring at the end of the 2023 Academic Year. You can find me at: My Blog

I have been in Computer Science for over 30 years as a computer programmer, textbook author, and educator. I enjoy all aspects of computer science but particularly AI.

When I started in Computer Science there were few women. Today there seem to be even fewer. In recent years I have taken on various roles that support UTD's efforts to increase participation of women and under-represented groups:

  • I am a co-sponsor of UTD's Grace Series of lectures empowering women and men in Computer Science, along with Bhavani Thurasingham, Mehra Nouruz Borazjany, Anjum Chida, and Gity Karami.
  • I am the faculty advisor for UTD's WWC Women Who Compute organization.
  • I am the inaugural Director of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access) for the CS Department

Teaching

Computer Science is not just a pathway to a great career, it is an intellectually challenging field that is continually evolving. I seek to instill a sense of curiosity, creativity, and persistence in students in classroom discussions, and by designing assessments and assignments that allow students to individually demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

Research

I completed my PhD in Computer Science in 2016. My research focused on Natural Language Processing, particularly in techniques that can be applied to educational technology.

A side interest is computer architecture. Prior to receiving my PhD, in collaboration with my husband, we published a series of microprocessor textbooks that are used around the world.
