Geissman Recognized for Ethics in Geosciences

Dr. John Geissman

University of Texas at Dallas geosciences professor Dr. John Geissman is well known for his application of the geosciences in service to society and his concern for the long-term stewardship of Earth.

In honor of his career-long dedication to the highest ethical standards and practices of the geoscience profession, the International Association for Promoting Geoethics has awarded Geissman its 2020 Geoethics Medal. The annual award recognizes scientists who have distinguished themselves in applying and assuring ethical approaches in geoscience research and practice.

“I am exceedingly humbled and grateful to receive this honor, but the credit goes to the many outstanding and caring geoscientists, including so very many great students, I have been so fortunate to work with over the years,” Geissman said.

Geissman, who joined the UT Dallas faculty in 2010, is head of the Department of Geosciences in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He has taught courses such as field geology, tectonics, structural geology, exploration geophysics and paleomagnetism, and he has mentored more than 70 graduate students during his career. He also has played a leading role in incorporating geoethics training for undergraduate students in the geoscience curriculum.

“John has long been an advocate for including geoethics instruction in classes and is interested in the full spectrum of geoethical issues, ranging from our stewardship of the planet to issues of diversity and equity in sciences,” said Dr. Robert Stern, professor of geosciences and former head of geosciences at UT Dallas. “I’m very proud to be at the same university and in the same department as him.”

Geissman’s research focuses on using paleomagnetism and rock magnetism to solve geological questions. He has served as an editor for several journals in his field and is active in multiple professional organizations, including serving as a fellow and past president of the Geological Society of America. He is also a fellow of the American Geophysical Union.
